What is this pop-up for: This pop-up (powered by an open-source software called Nudge) notifies you when there is a macOS update (example: from 13.2 to 13.6). Nudge does not handle upgrades (example: from macOS 12.4 to 13.2)
Why "Nudge" me: approximately 6 to 9 times a year, Apple releases updates to its operating system that contain security fixes and improvements. These updates require end-user (ie. you) intervention to complete, and you have to push a few buttons to start the process.
Why is there a countdown timer: updates address critical security fixes and are time-sensitive. Therefore they cannot be postponed indefinitely. If it is inconvenient to update during your workday today, you are free to do so in the evening evening or at any other less busy time.
What happens if I don't complete the update by the countdown timer deadline: your computer will cease to work and you'll need to call us. Please don't wait until that time.
5 Steps to Update:
- You'll get a popup that looks like this. Note the "Days Remaining to Update" (highlighted here in a red box). Click the "Update Device" button on the top right side of the pop-up (here in blue).
- The macOS Software Update window will appear. Click the "Update Now" button on the right side.
- You will be asked to accept the terms and conditions. Click the blue "Agree" button at the bottom right.
- Next, enter your computer user name and password (the ones you use to login to the computer). You do not need to be an administrator to install macOS updates.
- The macOS update will start downloading. Leave your computer plugged in to power and connected to the internet, with the lid open. The update process will take 30-60 minutes to download, prepare itself, and install.
