To capture the entire screen, a window, or just a portion of the screen on your Mac, follow the steps below:
Take a screenshot on your Mac:
- Press and hold the SHIFT, Command, and the 3 keys together.
- You will hear a shutter sound and a small thumbnail image on the lower right-hand corner of your screen. If you want to edit the screenshot, simply click on the image.
Capture a portion of your Mac screen:
- Press and hold the Shift, Command, and the 4 keys together
- Drag the crosshair
to select the area of the screen to capture. You can also move the selection by pressing and holding the Space bar while dragging. To cancel taking the screenshot, press the Esc (Escape) key.
- Release your mouse or trackpad button to take the screenshot.
- You will hear a shutter sound and a small thumbnail image on the lower right-hand corner of your screen. If you want to edit the screenshot, simply click on the image.
How to capture a window or menu:
- Open the window or menu that you want to capture.
- Press and hold the Shift, Command, 4, and Space bar together. The pointer changes to a camera icon
. To cancel taking the screenshot, press the Esc (Escape) key.
- Click the window or menu to capture it. To exclude the window's shadow from the screenshot, press and hold the Option key while you click.
- You will hear a shutter sound and a small thumbnail image on the lower right-hand corner of your screen. If you want to edit the screenshot, simply click on the image.
Note: All your screenshots are saved to your Desktop Folder by default.
How to screen record the entire screen:
1. Press and hold the Shift, Command, 5 key together. You will see the options to screen record the entire screen, screen record a selected portion of the screen, or capture a still image of the screen.
2. Click in the onscreen controls. Your pointer changes to a camera
.
- Click any screen to start recording that screen, or click Record in the onscreen controls.
- To stop recording, click
in the menu bar. Or press Command-Control-Esc (Escape)
3. When you are done recording, a small thumbnail appears on the lower right-hand corner of your screen. If you want to edit the recording, simply click on the thumbnail.
Record a selected portion of the screen
- Click
in the onscreen controls.
- Drag to select an area of the screen to record. To move the entire selection, drag from within the selection.
- Click Record in the onscreen controls to begin recording.
- Click
in the menu bar or press Command-Control-Esc (Escape) to stop recording.
- When you are done recording, a small thumbnail appears on the lower right-hand corner of your screen. If you want to edit the recording, simply click on the thumbnail.
Note: All your screen recordings are saved to your Desktop Folder by default.
